HIGH-FREQUENCY WELDING is a welding process in which the heat source used to melt the joining surfaces is obtained from high-frequency (HF) alternating current (ac) resistance heating. High-frequency current has certain characteristics that make it useful for welding. Unlike direct current (dc) or low-frequency alternating current, HF current tends to flow at high densities along surfaces (skin effect) and seeks adjacent parallel surfaces for its return path (proximity effect).

High-frequency currents can be supplied to the welding process or work piece by using either an induction coil (known as high-frequency induction welding, HFIW) or electrical contacts (known as high-frequency resistance welding, HFRW). The high frequency welding machine utilizes the computer or central processing unit, various means for sensing various parameters of the welding machine, and various means for activating various components of the machine.

In particular, the computer maintains information on the parameters of the welding machine and automatically selects the necessary commands for the various components of the machine. High frequency is also used to heat tube ends or strip prior to forge butt welding, but these are less common techniques. Finned tube can be produced by welding a strip to the tube, either spirally or longitudinally, using the HF contact welding method. The workhorse of the tube and pipe industry has been the high frequency (HF) vacuum tube welder. Recently, an increasing number of producers have been installing the HF solid-state welder, in part because of its efficiency, compact design, and high power factor. Many vacuum tube welders are still in use, however, and operators need to be just as knowledgeable about current vacuum tube maintenance and troubleshooting techniques as they are about solid-state procedures Pipe welders use heat to permanently join metal pipes.

They are also responsible for laying the pipes and fitting them together before using molten metal to bond them. Many pipe welders work in the petroleum industry, and weld pipes that are used to transport oil and other fossil fuels. Others weld pipes that are used in power plants or sewer systems. Given the possible hazards involved in the work, pipe welders must receive proper training before beginning a career in the field.

Please help…don’t know how to solve this.?

A resistor R, a coil and are in series across an A.C. source. The circuit current is 2A. The voltage across R is 20V, across the coil is 50V, and across the capacitor is 100V. The voltage cross the combination R and oil is 60 V. What are the source voltage and the resistance and inductance of the coil.

To answer this question you need to draw a phasor diagram.

Start by drawing a line a horizontal line PQ from left to right representing the resistive volt-drop in the coil; call this a. Then draw QR vertically upward, representing the inductive volt-drop in the coil; call this b. Then complete the hypotenuse PR – the total voltage across the coil – 50v.

Now extend QP to the left to reach O. OP is the voltage (20v) across the resistor. Finally draw OR. This is the voltage across the coil and resistor together (60v).

50^2 = a^2 + b^2

(20 + a)^2 + b^2 = 60^2

400 +40a + a^2 + b^2 = 3600

400 +40a + 50^2 = 3600

2900 + 40a = 3600… etc

a = 700/40 = 17.5 This is the voltage across the internal resistance of the coil. The resistance is V/I = 17.5/2 ohms.

Now that you know a, you can find b, which is the voltage due to the inductance of the coil. This is IwL. To find L you must know the frequency. Maybe you can assume that this is 50Hz.

To find the source voltage you must draw a phasor diagram showing the total reactive voltage (b -100), the total resistive voltage (20 + a), and the phasor sum of these (the supply voltage) as the hypotenuse of a right-triangle. Use Pythagoras to calculate the hypotenuse.
